triangle Transportation & Public Works' Fleet Management Division recently purchased several new environmentally-friendly vehicles for two ACC departments: ACC's first hybrid vehicle, a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid, as part of the ACC Tax Assessor’s vehicle fleet; and two Global Electric Motorcars (G.E.M.’s) for the ACC Solid Waste Department’s downtown litter operations.

The two new G.E.M.’s will replace two gasoline-powered trucks, which will in turn replace other vehicles that are not serving current division needs or nearing the end of their useful life cycle. The two battery-powered G.E.M. electric vehicles operate with a 72-volt battery system and plug into a standard 110-volt outlet. The vehicles’ costs of ownership are one-third less than gasoline-powered vehicles, and the vehicles’ operation costs only pennies a day. The G.E.M.s are listed as a Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV), according to Federal Test Procedure emission standards.

The combination of a SUV and a hybrid vehicle was a logical choice for the Tax Assessor’s office given the need of a vehicle capable of in-town and off-road driving, improved fuel economy, and lower emissions. The vehicle runs on both gas and electric power and is designed to produce minimal air pollution in combination with reduced fuel usage. The Ford Escape averages 33 miles per gallon, compared to an average 21 miles per gallon for a non-hybrid Ford Escape. The vehicle is listed as a Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV II), according to Federal Test Procedure emission standards.

The purchase of the G.E.M.s and the hybrid reflect the Unified Government’s utilization of alternative fuels to decrease vehicle emissions. In July 2006, the Fleet Management Division began using a B5 blend of biodiesel fuel in 24 vehicles as part of a pilot project. After a successful 6-month trial period, the biodiesel blend on these pilot vehicles was increased to B10 blend biodiesel in late February 2007. The majority of diesel vehicles in Athens-Clarke County have converted to the B5 blend biodiesel, which is a reflection of the pilot program’s success and part of a continuing push to lower fuel usage.

triangle The Athens-Clarke County Transportation and Public Works Department has teamed with ACC Public Utilities and the Upper Oconee Watershed Network (UOWN) to place signs where roads cross over streams or creeks.  The organizations hope this will help foster public interest in learning about our community's streams and rivers watershed.

triangle The Athens-Clarke County Department of Transportation and Public Works was selected by the Georgia Chapter of the American Concrete Institute to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award. The award highlights innovative concrete paving projects constructed within the last year. The department was recognized for its work with porous concrete at the Athens transit facility.
