New! The Board of Elections staff has completed the examination and verification of the nomination petition from Kenneth Brown, an Independent candidate for the office of Sheriff to be filled at the November 4, 2008 General Election in Athens-Clarke County. The petition has been deemed to meet all the legal requirements and was approved by the Board of Elections on July 21, 2008.
The petition includes 2,452 valid signatures of registered Athens-Clarke County voters, all of whom are eligible to vote in the upcoming General Election. The required number of valid signatures for this petition was 2,378. The number of signatures required is based on 5% of the number of active registered voters who were eligible to vote in the last election for the office of Sheriff. The last election held for this position was November 2, 2004, when 47,545 citizens were registered to vote.
Kenneth Brown will appear on the November 4, 2008 General Election ballot as an Independent candidate. Absentee ballots will be available beginning September 22, 2008, 45 days prior to the election, and Advance Voting will take place October 27-31, 2008 in the Classic Center Firehall.

Registered voters in Athens-Clarke County can now request an absentee ballot (as of Thursday, May 8) for the General Primary on July 15 and the General / Non-Partisan Election on November 4 by completing the application located on the Secretary of State's Web site and submitting the form to the the ACC Board of Elections by mail or fax.
Voters can request an absentee ballot beginning 180 days prior to an election without providing a reason. Absentee ballots will be mailed 45 days prior to federal, state, and county elections and 21 days prior to elections featuring only municipal candidates.
Voters must submit a separate absentee ballot application for each election, unless they are physically disabled, of advanced age, or exempted by the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act.
Voters participating by absentee ballot by mail are not required to provide photo identification. Absentee ballots must be received by the county registrar by Election Day.

Voters in elections are required to show one of the following six forms of photo ID when voting:
- A Georgia driver’s license, even if expired;
- Any valid state or federal government issued photo ID, including a free Voter ID Card issued by your county registrar or Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS);
- Valid U.S. passport;
- Valid employee photo ID from any branch, department, agency, or entity of the U.S. Government, Georgia, or any county, municipality, board, authority, or other entity of this state;
- Valid U.S. military photo ID; or
- Valid tribal photo ID.
If a voter does not have one of these forms of photo identification, they can obtain a FREE Voter ID card at their county registrar’s office or the Georgia Department of Driver Services.

Mission Statement
The Board of Elections manages all voter
registrations and conducts all elections held in Athens-Clarke County
(including the city of Winterville) using as guidelines the Georgia
Elections Code and the U.S. Justice Department Regulations. In carrying
out its duties, the Board of Elections strives to be of service
to every citizen by being fair, nondiscriminatory, and informed
on all election laws and legislative changes that will affect their
duties and responsibilities to the public.
The office educates the public on all election dates and laws and
is responsible for the certification of election results. The Board
of Elections handles the qualification process for candidates, which
includes financial disclosure. The office maintains an accurate list
of voters for election, for candidates and for jury lists. |
