Ecological
Niche
|
The
screech owl is a fearless predator of mice and insects.
However, if the opportunity arises, the screech owl is
capable of attacking and killing large rats, which weigh
far more than the owl. The primary predator of the screech
owl is the much larger horned owl. |

Life
Cycle
|
From
4 to 7 round, white eggs are laid in late winter or early
spring. The eggs hatch after about four weeks of incubation.
At about 6 to 7 weeks of age, the young owls begin flying.
Their average life span is about 12 to 15 years. |

Behavior
and physical adaptations
|
The
screech owl is found in both red and grey colors (above).
It is still unknown as to why this has evolved, since
it had nothing to do with sex differences, location, or
habitat. The color pattern and tufts or horns are excellent
camouflage and make them extremely difficult to see. |
